Mitt Romney and Clint Eastwood and his chair were considered the top two highlights of the Republican National Convention in Tampa in late August, each garnering about 17 percent in a national poll of viewers by the Pew Foundation.
There was no shortage of highlights last week, however, among the Democrats. Like them or hate them, youve got to give them credit for their oratory skills and with Bill Clinton, in particular, his ability to take complex issues and explain them succinctly to his listeners.
Yet, my favorite speech was delivered by a woman who was to have been Clintons warm-up on Wednesday night. And warm up the crowd she did.
Elizabeth Warren, the moving force behind the new U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and now a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts, didnt pull any punches in describing the headlock the big banks and financial conglomerates have on the economic well-being of Americans these days.
People feel like the system is rigged against them. And heres the painful part: Theyre right, Warren said in her first address to a party convention.
The system is rigged. Look around. Oil companies guzzle down billions in subsidies. Billionaires pay lower tax rates than their secretaries. Wall Street CEOs the same ones who wrecked our economy and destroyed millions of jobs still strut around Congress, no shame, demanding favors, and acting like we should thank them. Anyone here have a problem with that? Well, I do.
