Health care haggling, midterm momentum and tests of Trump's power: The political stories that will define 2026

Mike Bebernes, Reporter

This past year has been a big one in politics. Donald Trump returned to the White House. Elon Musk took a chainsaw to the federal bureaucracy. Republicans passed a trillion-dollar “big, beautiful bill” full of Trump’s policy priorities. The government went through the longest shutdown in history. Congress spent months fighting over health care and the Epstein files.

Anyone hoping things might slow down in 2026 is likely to be disappointed. While there will undoubtedly be unexpected events, there are some things we know to watch out for as we head into the new year.

These are some of the issues, dynamics and debates that will help define politics in 2026.

Midterm elections
The most important date on the political calendar in 2026 is Nov. 3, the day that midterm elections will decide which party controls Congress for the final two years of Trump’s presidency.

so instead of analyzing whether things will be better or worse for the American people the author is wondering if Trump can pull off a win.
