An Apology to Those I Offended - Holly Berkley Fletcher

Good read.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to acknowledge the detrimental impact of my actions on our once close relationship. You have rightfully pointed out that I have become increasingly strident—nay, hysterical—in my political views, to the point that there is very little left of my personality apart from them. You are correct that I have been judgmental and condescending, unwilling to see other perspectives, and frequently devoid of Christian love. I have hurt your feelings, discounted your perspective, and blamed you for the actions of others. Here, I confess all these things in detail and sincerely apologize.

I apologize for being disappointed that you voted for someone who tried to overthrow humanity’s original constitutional democracy. I should acknowledge your feelings that the 2020 election was stolen despite no evidence of such being presented in over 60 court cases. Forgive me for not realizing that judgements in our society are made not in courts but by violent mobs, and that when the leader of the mob gets reelected President and then pardons everyone, that changes the official record. What can I say, I have been slow to adapt to changing times.

I apologize for implying you are a racist because you voted for an administration that seeks to end all non-white immigration, expel even legal immigrants, revoke the citizenship of non-white people, is only admitting white “refugees,” and violate the Constitution in pursuit of these goals. I should acknowledge that you can personally love people whom your chosen President scapegoats, stereotypes, and actively harms. I should give you more credit for all the mission trips you have taken to countries your President calls “shitholes,” the economies of which he is crushing with policies that were discredited a century ago that also harm Americans. I should remember the work you do through your church with refugee families, whom your chosen leader wants to return to countries where they will be killed.

I am so very sorry for not understanding how important certain issues are to you and not honoring your wish to vote accordingly, even if it throws the entire world order that has brought peace and prosperity to much of the globe for the past 80 years into doubt, danger, and chaos. How petty of me to be alarmed at your President’s destruction on all of our nation’s historical geopolitical advantages—such as higher education that attracts the world’s best and brightest, scientific research, economic stability, and a network of global alliances—when he has also appointed a drug addict and con man the head of our nation’s healthcare system. I have too often allowed my fear for the future of all of our children override my ability to see how concerned you are about the handful of trans girls playing sports and the potential threat they represent to your life.
