A few times over the past year, I’ve quoted Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s famous line: “Against stupidity we are defenseless.” But this sentiment in and of itself is incomplete when talking about the Trump Regime. Instead, Martin Niemöllerl’s separate poem must be bolted on to express the danger that we face when it comes to these ferociously dark times.

Many of you know the poem, even if you don’t know the name of its author:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
