Republicans Thought Cheating Was a Birthright. Oops.

Julie Roginsky

Republicans are having a tantrum so operatic it deserves its own libretto. After years of weaponizing redistricting like a partisan chainsaw — revving it, swinging it, daring anyone to stop them — they are now standing amid the wreckage, clutching their pearls, and sobbing that Democrats are being unfair.

Waaaah.

This most recent sob story centers on Virginia and California, where Democrats are moving to redraw congressional maps in ways that could all but eradicate Republican seats. Conservatives are screaming that democracy itself is under assault. An op-ed in The New York Post on Friday shrieked that Virginia Democrats are “protecting democracy by screwing voters,” a sentence so unintentionally self-owning it should be bronzed and mounted over Rupert Murdoch’s desk.

And yet — how strange, how mysterious — Republicans seem to have forgotten how we got here.
