Trump Started this Illegal War, Alienated Our Allies, and Now He's Mad No One Will Help
Mike Nellis
This morning I woke up to the news that NATO and our European allies are refusing to get entangled in Donald Trumps reckless war by providing military assistance in the Strait of Hormuz. NATO exists so that allies defend each other when attacked. But NATO isnt designed to support a unilateral war launched in the middle of the night on Truth Social.
And the reaction from Trump, MAGA influencers, and the same corrupt, war-mongering Republican politicians who spent years attacking our allies? Theyre whining that Europe wont help.
And honestly, I had to laugh.
Because it raises a pretty obvious question: What the hell did they expect?

Refusing to participate in an illegal war is perfectly appropriate.

So to sum up:

1. Trump alienates/insults allies
2. he launches an unnecessary war with no international legitimacy
3. he declares war âover,â dismisses need for alliesâ help
4. he sees the war go sideways
5. he âdemandsâ allies help us solve a problem he said doesnât exist

The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East, the American president wrote. Thats OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we dont need them any longer But we will remember. We dont need people that join Wars after weve already won!...
After claiming in an NBC News interview that unnamed countries had already committed to helping secure the strait a dubious assertion, given the circumstances and available information the Republican demanded that foreign nations step up and provide the U.S. with the kind of security assistance he recently said was unnecessary.
Trump on Strait of Hormuz: "Really, I'm demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory, because it is their territory ... they should help us. You could make the case that maybe we shouldn't be there at all, because we don't need it. We have a lot of oil."

.....Indeed, the series of events seems preposterous. After spending the last year alienating U.S. allies, Trump launched an unnecessary war with no international legitimacy. He then prematurely declared victory, while simultaneously dismissing the need for international assistance, all while characterizing the Strait of Hormuz as a problem thats already been solved.
It was at this point that the same American president, without explanation, turned on a dime and started demanding assistance from the same countries hes insulted to address a problem hes claimed doesnt exist.
Foreign countries havent exactly rushed to answer Trumps call for help, and Australian and Chinese officials have already rejected U.S. outreach. Imagine that.

(1,075 posts)Nothing but insults, claiming they're worthless, claiming we've been carrying them all along and it's time they started pulling their weight. During this term, he's said more than once that he doesn't think he needs to defend any of the other members if they should be attacked. He's threatened not to defend them no matter what. "Why should he?" is the whole of his argument.
Mutual defense is literally the primary job of any NATO member. If he won't do it - if he won't agree to do it - he's broken the pact. There is no agreement, no contract. They're on their own, as far as he's concerned.
And so are we. He can't change his mind now, just because the incompetent moron's gotten our ass in a sling. We're not members in any way that matters any more. They all know if they did come to our defense, he still wouldn't lift a finger to save them, except to point and laugh while figuring how to make a profit at their expense.
I miss NATO. I admire NATO. I wish we could rejoin NATO, but we can't as long as he and his ilk are in power.
