What Trump Just Agreed to In Iran

In the span of several hours yesterday, Donald Trump went from threatening Iran by ensuring that “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” to giving Iran everything it could possibly have wished for — and more.

For all the “pallets of cash” that Republicans were screaming about Barack Obama delivering to Tehran as part of the Iranian nuclear deal a decade ago, Trump has just agreed to strengthen the Iranian regime in ways the Ayatollahs could only have dreamed of back then.

Before we get to that, we should exhale for a moment, because as abysmal as this situation is — and it is absolutely horrific — it pales in comparison to the alternative, which is an unstable lunatic using this nation’s nuclear arsenal to wipe a country of 92 million off the face of the earth. It is not unreasonable to believe that this is where Trump was going when the sun rose on Tuesday morning. In that sense, we should be grateful that he blinked.

But by blinking, he has delivered a massive windfall to one of the worst regimes on earth. Now, rather than negotiating from a position of strength, as Obama once did, he is negotiating from a position of profound weakness.
