Donald Trump's legacy rests in the hands of federal courts
In President Donald Trump's second term, he has pursued his political objectives with unbridled ambition, but whether those policies will actually be enacted is largely still in question.
Though the legislative branch of government, dominated by Trump's allies in Congress, has shown little appetite to restrain him, the judiciary may.
From prosecuting his political opponents to dismantling agencies created by Congress to exerting control over how Americans vote, Trump could leave a lasting impact on the power of the presidency or not, if the court system stops him.
"Donald Trump has attempted to flood the zone with illegality," Norm Eisen, a former Obama White House ethics lawyer who cofounded the Democracy Defenders Fund, which is involved in many prominent cases against the administration, told USA TODAY.
