Can you say "sour grapes"?
Tagg Romney said his father "wanted to be president less than anyone I've met in my life," according to the Boston Globe.
He had no desire, the eldest Romney son said. If he could have found someone else to take his place ... he would have been ecstatic to step aside. He is a very private person who loves his family deeply and wants to be with them, but he has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesnt love the attention."
Tagg Romney told the paper that his father was resistant to running because of his unsuccessful 2008 bid for president.
The oldest Romney son was an instrumental figure in his father's political career. He served as an adviser to the 2012 campaign, and has worked on previous campaigns.

(9,132 posts)If Mitt really didn't have the fire in his belly to become President, he would have done better for himself never to have run. As a low-level Obama campaign donor and low-level campaign worker, I think I can afford to dollop out this much magnanimity.
As a partisan Democrat, though, I can't help but wonder how President Obama would have fared against the Newt or the Sanitarium in the just-past election.

(25,988 posts)I'm convinced that RawMoney wanted the job so badly he could taste it - if for no other reason than as a 'trophy' accomplishment that his father sought but couldn't attain. The son's allusion to gawd is another likely reason why Mutt kept running; he was just helping fulfill gawd's will, yunno. Even the attempt to portray Mutt as self-effacing is an outright lie, considering the lengths to which he went to draw attention to himself before & during the campaign.
It'll take more than a few offhand comments from his worthless son to counteract the accumulated evidence of the past few years. Mutt thought he was destined for greatness - ordained by gawd, no less - so it's gotta sting like a mother. I hope the lesson is not lost on his dissipated progeny, who probably have 'daddy' issues of their own and may decide to make their own 'divine right' run for office at some point.

(53,661 posts)Tagg'a assessment is the same one I came to in the last weeks of the campaign, that his father is private person who operates best around his family and friends, as he is not strong enough to work with strangers. He seemed a boy playing a role, looking for the approval of a parental figure to escape punishment. Obama is not like that at all, his is able to face his enemies and keep his sense of self and his ideals intact - he looks to the end of the game.
I think Mittens wanted to be president as much as Prince Charles wants to be the King of England. Both were just born to the job by religion and family tradition, but would rather be enjoying the quiet life. It seems miserable to me, what some people are put through. I don't think he intended to act as president or a leader, except by title, without being told what to do by the Koches or other players. I think this was the plan by his very wealthy backers:
All we have to do is replace Obama. ... We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don't need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.
Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States. This is a change for Republicans: the House and Senate doing the work with the president signing bills. His job is to be captain of the team, to sign the legislation that has already been prepared.

The entire thing was an exercise in keeping up appearances to those he regarded as benefactors, whose approval he wanted to keep. When a person travels in those circles, it can be very profitable no matter what the outcome and being excluded from that society is cold.
In the end, I feel sorry for the inner child that I saw exposed by Mittens. Or maybe I just feel sorry for almost everyone, I don't know. I don't feel sorry for Obama, because he is a mature man not looking or needing approval for himself, but wants to see his ideals come true. He's not unsure of himself personally, and no matter how the election came out, I knew he'd be alright.
I felt a lack of confidence covered with bluster from Romney, and I saw pain under that. His family was tortured along with him as he was making a fool of himself in that last debate.
JMHO.

(321 posts)Of course not. If he had a spot light on him 24x7, then he wouldn't be able to get away with half the crap that he has in the past. Hiding behind God is not an excuse for bad behavior. The fact that he puts so many people out of work is a prime example of his hypocrisy.

(1,307 posts)He wanted to be the King of America, wield the power
and feed his narcissism with that aristocratic crown placed
squarely on his square head.
AND Ann Romney was practically drooling at the prospect
of being the Queen of the Castle. She probably will need
ECT to get her out of that abyss.
AND tell me that Tagg didn't dream of being the Crown
Prince, as well.
What Romney was dreading was the possibility of another
defeat -- another wound to the ego -- his worst nightmare.
How could he be rejected -- TWICE. He must have seen it
coming (even if only unconsciously) which is what Taggy was
sensing from his Shakespearean figure of a daddy.
