Filner: From everywhere to nowhere
Where is San Diegos mayor?
Thats not a question one had to ask in the first few months of Mayor Bob Filners tenure as he raced around the city to so many events and mugged in front of so many cameras that he earned the moniker filnereverywhere on social media.
Then lurid allegations of sexual misconduct were leveled against Filner last month and he scaled back his public appearances as reporters surrounded him and peppered him with questions at each stop. Now its been 22 days as of Saturday since Filner last spoke publicly and neither his staff nor his defense lawyers will say where hes been or when hell return.
The leader of the countrys eighth-largest city is essentially in hiding.

More than a dozen women have now come forward with accusations of Filners inappropriate sexual behavior and unwanted advances while others have described awkward encounters with the mayor. Theres a near-unanimous call for his resignation from elected officials, community leaders and prominent organizations. A hostile City Council is making moves to minimize Filners ability to govern. And the effort to forcibly remove him from office via recall formally kicks off today with a Freedom from Filner rally at City Hall.
Polls show San Diegans overwhelmingly want him to resign and favor a recall if he doesnt.
...
Efforts to track down Filner have been fruitless despite a few reported sightings around town this past week and the search for San Diegos mayor has become all-consuming for some. On Friday, a 10News crew staked out his downtown apartment and then followed a black SUV Filners mode of transportation when with his security detail that left the building. The news crew lost sight of the vehicle heading north on State Route 163.
Whenever Filner does choose to re-emerge, hell find a hostile environment waiting for him at City Hall. The City Council is unanimous in its call for his resignation and is scheduled to hold an Aug. 28 closed session to discuss possible action against the mayor, who is facing multiple local, state and federal investigations that also focus on how hes spent and managed city money.

(3,163 posts)There are questions about his spending. A trip to Paris, and spending on city credit cards associated with that, not to mention who paid for the trip. Months of charges on city credit cards with no receipts turned in...
And extortion. Two construction projects on which he put executive stop orders, then released after builders made $100,000 contributions to Filner's pet projects.
