Call Your Rep Today to End Endless War
March 24, 2014
Dear Friends,
As I write this, some 200 young adult participants in our Spring Lobby Weekend are gathering in groups in at the 6th and I Historic Synagogue in Washington, DC. I hear them practicing how they hope to convince their representatives to repeal the Authorization for the Use of Military Force, the legislative linchpin of the past decade's "War on Terror."
Will you reinforce their message? Please call your representative today. Ask him or her to cosponsor legislation introduced by Rep. Adam Schiff, H.R. 2324, that would repeal the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force.
Here's why their advocacyand yoursis so important right now. Last year, 185 representatives voted to repeal this Authorization, just 33 short of the number needed to pass the repeal. This year, we can do betterbut it will take all of us working together, at lobby days in Washington and in district offices across the country, by email and phone. Will you call your representative today?
Yesterday, the staff director for one member of Congress explained to the Spring Lobby Weekend participants that members from across the political spectrum are beginning to question the war on terror. This year could be the tipping point, he said. Your phone call today can make a real difference in the position your representative takes. Please ask your representative to cosponsor H.R. 2324, legislation to repeal the Authorization for the Use of Military Force.
I also hope you'll be able to join us this Thursday night at 8 p.m. Eastern for a special conference call on the results of Spring Lobby Weekend and progress towards repealing the Authorization for the Use of Military Force. Get all the details and add the event to your calendar.
Thank you for your advocacy.
Sincerely,
Jim Cason
Associate Executive Secretary for Strategic Advocacy
P.S. This weekend, our Spring Lobby Weekend participants have heard from congressional staff, a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, lawyers who have visited the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay and others explaining how the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force has served as the legal justification for activities ranging from deadly drone strikes to NSA spying, from the war in Afghanistan to indefinite detention at Guantanamo. See photos and updates on what's been happening at Spring Lobby Weekend on Facebook and Twitter.
