JAY: So, Kevin, kick us off. TPP is what and matters why?
ZEESE: The Trans-Pacific Partnership has been in 16 rounds of negotiations over three years, pretty much in secret except for the 600 corporate advisers that have been working with the Obama administration to develop the terms. And it's called a trade agreement, but it's really much more than that. If you care about internet privacy, if you care about health care, financial regulation, labor rights, the environment, all these issues will be affected by the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and they'll give corporations more power than governments to control these issues, because profits will be the ultimate goal, much more important than people's necessities or protection of the planet.

(21,646 posts)Last week, U.S. trade representatives wrapped yet another round of closed-door talks for the largest free trade agreement ever negotiated by the United States -- the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The draft text of the agreement -- seen by many as NAFTA on steroids -- will have deep impacts on the lives of people across the Pacific Rim.
While members of Congress, the public and the press were shut out, 600 official corporate advisors -- people from places like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Walmart and Big Tobacco corporations like Philip Morris International were busy making deals at the negotiations.
Pieces of the negotiations have been leaked and what we do know is pretty frightening. This corporate-driven agreement opens the door to assaults on public health policies -- from decreasing peoples access to medicine, to doing away with laws that protect our food. And it will give global corporations more power to strip health and environmental safeguards, making it even easier for Big Tobacco to file lawsuits against lifesaving public policy measures around the world.
But its not too late -- you can make a difference. Weve seen global corporations try this before. More than 15 years ago, at this stage in the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) negotiations, not only could Congress see the text, but you and I could as well. Because those texts were released, the public outcry stopped the FTAA in its tracks. We can do it again.

(17,301 posts)It is designed so that corporations can put a stop to any legislation in any country signing on to T-Pee Pee that they don't like. You know what will happen. Just like with other trade deals, it will be a road block to anything that might benefit citizens. Do you want that river cleaned of pollutions? Too bad, the corporations wants to dump its waste into it. Do you want to promote American products? Too bad a transnational corporation does not approve.
It is sad. FDR gave us a second Bill of rights: "an "economic bill of rights" which would guarantee:
Employment, with a living wage
Freedom from unfair competition and monopolies
Housing
Medical care
Education
Social security"
And Obama's will give us the T-Pee Pee a bill of rights for international corporations.
It's hard to believe these 2 president are from the same political party.
