... so I do NOT see how they are going to be able to clean this up.

http://www.aapg.org/explorer/2007/09sep/canadian_oilsands.cfm says that the density of tar sands oil is 960 kilograms per cubic meter. Water is 1000 kg/cubic meter, so not far off. Maybe denser if cold?
