As this comes a day or two of my learning of the names origins, I just have to ask.

Does OP listen to the Rollins KCRW show? He played some Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band last week.

An absolute gem of great diverse music and the history behind the bands.

And Rollins banter is freaking hilarious..

and I highly recommend it.
Viv Stanshall, the front man and part time singer - the other was Neil Innis - was also an excellent ukelele and recorder player. His 2 solo albums are worth seeking out as well as the transcendent Sir Henry at Rawlinson's End comedy album. Viv had an unforgettable speaking voice.
Yes, the Bonzo Dog Band was a rareity among rock groups - they were intentionally very funny. They had one hit, Urban Spaceman which was produced by Paul McCartney and Neil sang lead and Viv played recorder.

The Beatles were big fans but, alas, the Bonzos never achieved the fame and fortune they deserved.
Mr Apollo is another very funny and quite accessible song.

The BBC documentary on Viv Stanshall is available on DVD and is worth searching for.
Thanks for the OP!
