(28 posts)I strongly believe that these photos posted by RandiFan1290 are from the search in Watertown, MA for the Boston Marathon bombers. (The town seal on the trash can, and the Massachusetts plates on the cars kind of gave it away.) It does indeed represent a kind of police state, but far different from the one represented by the nasty cop in TN.

(994 posts)It was determined to move to 367 Eveningside and attempt to contact Mitchell. If Mitchell answered the door he would be asked to leave. If he refused to leave he would be arrested for Obstructing a Police Officer. If Mitchell refused to answer the door, force entry would be made and Mitchell would be arrested, the report determined.

If you think LEO don't profile at DUI checkpoints, consider this: I've driven through at least three checkpoints since I've turned 50, and I've gotten waved through every time. I am a white, grey-haired old lady, and I apparently don't hit on their "gotta be drinking or drugging" profile. I could be carrying massive quantities of drugs, and they won't even look at me twice.
(Disclaimer for the NSA: I don't do drugs or alcohol, boys. I don't carry any contraband in my car. I was just hypothesizing...)

(7,658 posts)since..... oh yeah, the last time I was there .(Which WILL be the last time...never again).Sept of last year. 61 year old white male, but out of state plates and ...the HORROR...liberal (including DU) bumper stickers. FULL search with the State Trooper's drug sniffing dog...under the hood, trunk, windows rolled down, all 4 wheel wells, and then a SECOND circuit around all those locations before grudgingly letting me go.
If I'd been black or brown, or had not completely kissed his ass , I can only guess what might have happened.

But yeah, if I never go through the south again (and this wasn't even the deep south, just Arkansas, Tennessee and Virginia) it'll be fine with me, although I do like Memphis, but oh well, there are other parts of the country to visit without this police state bullshit (so far anyway).

(36,418 posts)Something like 90% of the police recruited in recent years are former military police or combat veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That trooper should feel right at home assuming that position in an up-armored HUMVEE.
It's become a very thin line between combat and policing, and the boundaries are crumbling.

(12,882 posts)These ex-military police - gotta figure they're not college grads (of course, there will be exceptions). They're folks that got out of the military with little training but to carry weapons and intimidate. What's the job market for those kinds of skills? It's either law enforcement - or some mercenary contractor. I'm not defending them - just recognizing that in this "economy" where good wages have been eliminated by all the fabulous "trade agreements" and offshoring our public servants have "provided" for us, guvamint services likely pay the best wages - altho that's slowly changing as conservatives privatize everything, little by little.
Maedhros
(10,007 posts)For the most part, they signed up in good faith to protect the nation. My beef is with those who callously misuse our military men and women by sending them off on ultimately counter-productive campaigns that have nothing to do with the security of our country and everything to do with protecting corporate interests. I also take issue with those citizens of the United States that cheer on this bullshit.
The men and women of the United States Armed Forces volunteer to risk their lives so that we don't have to. The very least they should expect in return is that we won't allow them to be sent off to fight meaningless conflicts that serve only to line the pockets of contractors and exploitative multinationals.
The fact that veterans are funneled into domestic law enforcement is a symptom of the problem. The problem itself is that United States citizens have become so complacent as to allow our veterans to be ignored when they come home and to allow our police forces to behave like occupying armies.

(12,882 posts)Twelve years of war in Afghanistan - and in the end it WASN'T all that warring that did bin Laden in! Basically, at best we've made things a bit more stable for the poppy farmers. So I guess we could say this war DOES benefit U.S. citizens addicted to Heroin.

You might think twice about testing your constitutional rights here in Seattle, what with the "pattern of excessive force" as determined by the DOJ.

(752 posts)YOUR RIGHTS
- You have the right to remain silent. If you wish to exercise that right, say so out loud.
- You have the right to refuse to consent to a search of yourself, your car or your home.
- If you are not under arrest, you have the right to calmly leave. (me: Really? Good luck with that)
- You have the right to a lawyer if you are arrested. Ask for one immediately.
- Regardless of your immigration or citizenship status, you have constitutional rights.
Of course the above assumes that you won't be punched in the face, had your head stomped on and/or gunned down before the SPD lies about the encounter.
The responsibilities part (following) seems fairly sensible however:
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Do stay calm and be polite.
- Do not interfere with or obstruct the police.
- Do not lie or give false documents.
- Do prepare yourself and your family in case you are arrested.
- Do remember the details of the encounter.
- Do file a written complaint or call your local ACLU if you feel your rights have been violated.

I broke no laws, and was pulled over and harassed for 1/2 hour. It astounds me how these assholes think they can stretch the law and get by with it.
