Related: About this forumRick Santorum in college. A jackass even then.
He's the one on the right with the pipe. In 1980. Which probably contained tobacco. A pipe.

(13,594 posts)it was kind of ridiculous. I guess kind of a pretentious, too trendy look. I didn't really like going around in public smoking it. She was also a smoker that just really loved the smell of a pipe and good cigars. Since I already smoked cigarettes there was no harm in trying a pipe. I've smoked them occasionally ever since but usually just at home.
I saw a kid standing on a corner at the University of Idaho with a couple girls smoking a pipe awhile back. Looked like he was in training to be a stereotypical professor with a tweed jacket and pipe. The women I was with laughed at him.

(14,400 posts)You just know he thought he was the only cool one in that group of frat boys and girl (Jody Filipek?).
You can almost smell the academic achievement oozing off the page can't you?

(11,816 posts)Since they mentioned the name of the fraternity, which is visible in the photo but not in my text.
Not sure why you can't see the picture. But anyway, it's a fraternity picture of Santorum from 1980, looking like a jackass, wearing a beard and holding a pipe.
I don't even see a broken picture icon.

(47,675 posts)Okay, okay, I also smoked one that had tobacco - Meerschaum pipe. Good smoke. That and a corn-cob pipe are the only two I used for tobacco. I really can't see Mr. Frothy getting stoned. He sounds stoned anyway - and on something other than pot.

(11,816 posts)I thought not.
It's not the pipe. per se - it's the whole persona.

(47,675 posts)I'm not talking about the so-called clove cigarettes you can get now - I mean the hand-rolled no-filter type that burned for 25 minutes - DJarum, Kretek, etc.
I smoked a pack of those a day (10) and two packs of Camel unfiltered a day because that was the only tobacco product that had any flavor after the clove ones. I shouldn't be alive now. I had something (including joints and bong hits) burning from the moment I got up until the moment I went to bed. You could smoke at work back then. There was an ashtray on the back of the toilet so I could smoke in the shower.
But I loved the pipe and I still have it. I don't smoke anymore (quit in 85), but the pipe is beautiful and well colored from use. It's sort of a family heirloom now.
And yes, I was in a lot of pictures with that pipe and a beer in one hand. Hopefully they won't show up on the Internet.
