Record rainfall hits western Japan; 1 dead, 2 missing

July 29, 2013

One woman was killed and two men were missing after a record rainfall flooded extensive areas in the western prefectures of Yamaguchi and Shimane on July 28, officials said.

Observatory posts recorded 138.5 millimeters of rain per hour in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and 91.5 mm in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture.

Japan Meteorological Agency officials said it was the “heaviest rain ever recorded” in the region.

A woman died in Hagi after her home collapsed.

One man in Hagi and another in Tsuwano remained missing as of midday on July 29.

The rain flooded many houses, roads and train tracks, and triggered mudslides in mountainous areas.
