I say "I have the same position that President Reagan had" and proceed to cite this answer....usually that shuts them up!

Reagan was actually directly the reason why assault weapons were banned in the United States for 10 years starting in 1994, even though it was 5 years after his Presidency. The vote in the House came down to 2 Representatives, and Reagan personally wrote to one of them urging them to vote for it. Even 10 years later, George W. Bush said that if Congress renewed the Assault Weapons Ban, he would sign it. Unfortunately, rural Congressmen and women didn't make that possible.
