Possible security threat to close several U.S. embassies across the Middle East and Asia on Sunday.
Full Story:
The United States says it will close a number of embassies on Sunday because of security concerns.
U.S. State department spokeswoman Marie Harf on Thursday called the step "precautionary" but declined to specify the threat or list which missions would be closed.
{Marie Harf, U.S. State Department Spokeswoman}:
"The Department of State has instructed certain US embassies and consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4."
Harf says there will be an assessment afterwards on whether to reopen them.
A senior State Department official told NBC that the threat appeared to have originated somewhere in the Middle East and to be related to al Qaeda.
It was aimed at overseas diplomatic posts, not at facilities inside the U.S.
Quoting officials and Twitter postings, CNN reported that the action includes diplomatic facilities in Egypt, Israel, Libya, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
