It is a fitting in line of all the regression we have suffered, particularly since 2010, that this 50th anniversary ring loud and clear across the land.

(53,661 posts)It begins with a short video of PBO with his signature 'Hi everybody,' then urging people to continue on with MLK's work in this march. He notes that much work remains to be done on the 50th anniversary of MLK's historic march on Washington, to have America live up to its promises.
The video then goes to an audio track from a radio program with MLK's son and Sharpton promoting this event. Then there is a bit of music, that's all. It's a very short clip.
Naturally Obama is referring to this march, even more timely now than it was then:
March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom or "The Great March on Washington", as styled in a sound recording released after the event,[1][2] was one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history[3] and called for civil and economic rights for African Americans. It took place in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 28, 1963. Martin Luther King, Jr., standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech advocating racial harmony during the march.[4]
The march was organized by a group of civil rights, labor, and religious organizations,[5] under the theme "jobs, and freedom".[3] Estimates of the number of participants varied from 200,000 to 300,000.[6] Observers estimated that 7580% of the marchers were black and the rest were white and non-black minorities.
The march is widely credited with helping to pass the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965)...

I was energized as many millions were at the time. Many had not seen this movement building, just like they don't see what is happening now. Just like many did not realize that these voices would be heard in 2012.
I'm not hopeful M$M will be willing to promote this as they did Glenn Beck. Most likely they will find some celebrity to talk about that day and ignore the significance of this.
I can't think of anything as important in this time, for equality and survival. We cannot succeed without working together. This movement is being called The Second Reconstruction or Fusion Politics. Obama's election in 2008 was seen as a turning point for coalitions to build, but these groups get less media attention now, than in 1963.

(53,661 posts)As far as the skill sets being lost, I hear you loud and clear. The knowledge base in this country is constantly being decimated by the defunding of those in public jobs and their counterparts in the private sector. Their expertise is being forgotten. The nation needs money sent to do things for America and not be horded in the hands of the few. We must move toward the values of helping each other and building a future with education, health care and infrastructuve.
