US tests laser defence system on ship

The US Navy is equipping one of its ships with a weapon once only seen in science fiction movies. It is testing out a cannon that can shoot deadly laser beams. Military scientists have figured out how to improve lasers' power so that they can destroy enemy ships, incoming missiles, or aircraft. Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan reports.

I was watching a documentary in the 90s where they already had miniaturized versions of this. I believe they could be fit onto a shark's head.
I don't recall the name, but it was narrated by that guy who did the Wayne's World skits. 
Phasers next. Then photon torpedoes. Beam me the fuck fuck outta here! I wonder how long before this technology is used on "we the people?"
