(1,648 posts)The press has been astoundingly negligent in the Hastings case. SHAME on them, and heaven help us.

(135,425 posts)He might have gone on a meth bender, stayed up all night with no rest, and it wore off and left his system. But he still hadn't gotten any SLEEP, and his judgment might still have been impaired.
I'm not my best when I'm exhausted, either.
As an aside, per the autopsy, he also hadn't eaten anything recently -- he just had "tan fluid" in his stomach.
Downplaying the drugs is pointless in the context of the larger picture, too, because his brothers were in town for the express purpose of pushing him into "detox" because he'd fallen off the wagon after fourteen clean years. They didn't live in CA. They flew in from NY the day before, WITH him, to try to get him to go to rehab.
The coroner did not say "drugs had NOTHING to do with the accident" though Cenk insists that the case. The coroner said that he only had small amounts of drugs in his system at the time of his death. That is all he or she said. Drugs--or alcohol--can wear off and still have a residual effect, as anyone with a hangover can attest.
Finally--the whole "body cremated without family's permission" story is a flat out lie. Talk about shitty journalism! Anyone with half a brain would arrive at the logical conclusion that a guy whose body was half burned in a fiery car crash isn't ever going to be made "casket ready." Most importantly, though, Mother Jones debunked that flaky conspiracy theory, and demonstrated that a lot of these bullshit theories are being spread around like cowshit by a nutty Paulbot woman:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/08/michael-hastings-conspiracy-theories-kim-dvorak
Last month, for example, the Independent, a major British newspaper, picked up Dvorak's report claiming that Hastings' body "was cremated and it wasn't the request of the family in fact, the family wanted Michael's body to go home." But on Tuesday, veteran journalist Russ Baker dispelled the myth on his news site WhoWhatWhy by talking to a family member who confirmed that the cremation was done at the family's request. Dvorak later removed the passage saying Hastings' family wanted his body to "go home," but her story still hints at a cover-up, calling the cremation a "macabre twist."
Dvorak's other theories are just as questionable. She claimed on air that the engine of Hastings' Mercedes C250 coupe had been found behind the crash site, which would have been impossible with the forward velocity of an ordinary accident. The engine was found in front of the crash site. Her suggestion that a grainy video of the crash showed evidence of a "pre-explosion" sabotage has been dismissed by car experts. She has also reported that the intensity of the resulting fire might suggest the use of thermite accelerantsa popular theory among 9/11 truthers who believe thermite was used to melt the World Trade Center towers' steel columns. She's written credulously about the theory that President Barack Obama may not have been born in the United States. And Dvorak has repeated speculation by Richard Clarke, the former Bush- and Clinton-era counterterrorism czar, that Hastings' car's computer system may have been remotely hackedsomething that's technically possible but highly unlikely.

The article at the link is worth a read.
They need to let this man RIP, and stop causing agony to his family with these "stories."

(649 posts)I can see quietly disagreeing, but I find it odd to go to such lengths to convince others that "there is nothing to see here".
People reported that he was "probably drunk or high" since the story broke, and now that this was clearly not the case, it only cast doubts to you about a possible, perhaps, could-have-been, "hangover" or "exhaustion". Really?
Possibly, he was targeted for reveling too much about powerful people and operations ?
Perhaps, his car was tampered with leading to the "crash" (or run off the road into the tree) ?
Could-have-been, he was onto a story that NSA mercenary contractors monitoring his correspondence, dealt with to protect their "System" ? Profits are a huge motivator , people have been know to kill for less than $50, let alone $50 billions.
Just saying, you know, for balance sake.

(1,259 posts)that is the issue, not whether he had some drugs in his system. This WAS NOT a normal crash.

(135,425 posts)the likelihood that you might sever a fuel line in your car, cause sparks and the spray of fuel will catch fire and cause the vehicle go 'Boom!' isn't a conspiracy, it's simply eighth grade science.
Go back and look at the video post-crash. That gushing water bubbling up from that sheared off pipe to the left of the wreck isn't a water feature or a neighborhood Italian style fountain.

But, I'm sure you and Cenk Uygur are more interested in the truth than she is.

(18,998 posts)Because of this was an assignation then it was to send a warning to the rest to STFU.
And that is why they really don't care that it looks suspicious or not, in fact that is helpful, because if they can do it openly and get away with it the message that they have the power is delivered.
There is a difference in being interested in the truth and being able to pursue it.

(68,868 posts)Drugs were impairing his life on a full-time basis. That's why families hold interventions.
Never mind the crazy notion that someone driving around at 4:15 am might not be fully alert. Especially if going through drug withdrawal.
And Uygur is peddling Alex Jones's lie about the engine being behind the car, it was in front of it.
Yes, if you persist in acting like foul play is a substantial possibility based in the evidence, you're a loony conspiracy theorist.

(2,017 posts)and why favor the toxicology report over the coroner's report? And do you simply dismiss Hasting's concerns about people following him? Why is it that your POV is the only one allowed?

(5,668 posts)This whole thing sticks.
I was in a Chevy Corsica years ago my brother was driving near a gas station and we almost hit a lady (oh the look she gave us...) when the pedal fell to the floor.
There are many incidents like this in other cars. Hell one car of mine I could pull the wire and it would rev up. (smh)
I'm thinking Mercedes knows there might be a problem with it's accelerator and certainly doesn't want to get sued for it. If reporters would actually do their jobs which they didn't with NSA for decades... until now. Unless they are called on it. They'll continue to be lazy. Right now they don't want Dan Rathers or Peter Jennings (late) types. Tom Brokaw. bleh. Dan had a source cheat on him. You could trace this back to the Jefferey Wigand story which the movie is still somewhat fictional as he wasn't that much of an angel. But the allegation of how the (character played by Gina Gershon) treats Michael Wallace tells you where the news is right now. Basically one used to use the word inconclusive. This report just said that.
Hello I'm on Ritalin. 30mg a day.. Concerta sucks. same stuff different mix. my heart hated it. Take 20 mg around the morning and 10mg a bit later. (Medicare forces me this way. Medicaid did not Medicaid allowed me the 30 mg Ritalin LA which my Psych wants me on) Frankly I think everyone should experience Medicare for a year... See what a pain in the ass it is right now. ie Red tape. ie Docs really want me on Prevacid 30-40 mg. thats $170.. So I figured go lower. on Medicare... hahahahaha. they'd rather see me dead. As I just did last night breathed my stomach acid right into my lungs again I'm on some generic crap not Ranitidine (sp) that is a waist of $48. Prilosec they recommend and it's $10 more. but I have to jump thru such a massive hoop to get it I'm still waiting for over a month. .. Anyway so I'm on Ritalin 30mg. Frankly if Michael was taking Ritalin (Adderal had no effect on me) he would have been slamming his breaks on all the way to the crash. or trying to jump out of the car. The fact it exploded has always concerned me. Hence when idiots bring up 4 Dead in Libya. 4 Dead Americans.. I have to hit my head on the wall. Oh well if 4 dead is all it takes why isn't Bush and Cheney not in jail for killing off people who could point out they cheated in the 2004 election... And now this guy. Planes and cars going down for strange reasons. I count 2-3 right now.
Like trying to compare the death toll on Christians vs Muslims in Egypt. Very small amount of Christians dead verses a savage massacre on the muslim site. Neither is right but to be pointing fingers at Muslims for Revenge attacks. like hello look at the fucking numbers. If you believe this report on Michael I'd assume you believe Sandy Hook didn't happen..
