(12,051 posts)why are so many older degree holders treated like throwaway trash?
Yeah, I know, it's all our fault for not going back to school for one degree or another, at incredible cost, to chase a bunch of ephemeral 'good jobs,' only to see them disappear (or become $10 per hr jobs) when we graduate in debt. Please. Someone stop this nonsense.

(14,626 posts)A college education now only promises more debt and a low-wage job if any.

(14,595 posts)These kids coming out of high school need to be REAL careful about college now.
If Mom and Dad can foot the bill, or most of it, there is not as much risk.
But, a liberal arts degree of any kind if about useless now.
If you don't know what you are going to do, you had better be going engineering or some other STEM track, which is now the modern version of a liberal arts degree.
That, or you are set on a field.
Some tracks are dead ends unless you go Masters like Social Work or doctoral like Psychology. Heck, a MASTERS in Psychology puts you in a heck of a box much less an undergrad degree in it.
I know a lot of young people who had their hearts set on being vets who did their homework and come away finding out the math simply is not working anymore, the costs to get the right degree don't match up with the salary or the ability to get into your own practice.
I know a vet who has been ready to retire for several years but has no one able/willing to take his practice.
If you are going to college and paying your own way, you better have a VERY clear idea what you want to do, go engineering or find a vocational, business or technology trade school where you have A LOT less cost, get into the job force quicker and can make a solid if not earth shattering salary.
