(8,254 posts)it is too complex an issue to "be sold" to most people! When people can go to exchanges and see what the get for a certain price,,,,, they like !

(32,000 posts)And before I get slaughtered for wanting rainbow ponies and such ... think about how easy it would be to say and explain "age restriction eliminated from Medicare - everyone's in". Premiums on a sliding scale based on income. Basic insurance - if you want additional coverage get it on the secondary market.
That is what should have happened. Granted ACA has some nice features - no doubt about that - but it could be better. I'm choosing to look at it as a step in the right direction but much more work to do.
It has both policy and perception problems.
From a perception problem it was never bold or clear enough for people to wrap their brains around. Had there been a top ten list of advantages or something it might have been enticing and important in peoples minds. Also being a pile of snips, minor fixes, and nudges results in it being easier to attack. Had the republicans half a brain they would just snip away at the reforms legislatively rather than just making it on big target.
In some regards they are doing the administration a favor by continually referring to it as a solid target.
From a policy perception it is too meek in terms of what it reforms. There is very little in the way of cost control in the system and you only arrive at cost controls backwards by requiring insurance companies spend a certain percentage of their money on healthcare. There are too many loopholes and really the whole thing seems like a way to assure insurance company profits by pushing people into purchasing insurance.
That said, it is better than nothing.
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)but the reality of it is we didn't have enough power to get that passed..... ACA is a step in the right direction. I believe it and Medicare will morph into a single payer plan in time. But the question was about explaining ACA not whether it was the way to go!
TBF
(32,000 posts)have stated that a certain segment doesn't like it just because Obama suggested it.
Sadly I think that is also true. They seem to have no problem understanding all the various methods of guns they want to own, ammunition they want to use etc ... you can see the detail for yourself in our "gungeon" here.
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)if we had some kinda reasonable gun control so that the Crazies and thugs could not legally buy all the guns and ammo they want........ yep a real shame!

(11,441 posts)two world wars, the Depression, Vietnam, the civil rights movements, etc., but Americans can't be expected to understand... healthcare coverage?
It should have been sold to "other people" -- "some people" would have to catch up. Teabaggers were allowed to shape the message, and that was a HUGE fucking mistake.
Cryptoad
(8,254 posts)the "teabaggers" reshaping or shall we say the distortion of ACA, is proving to be of great benefit as ACA is becoming reality and it proves to the American People how much the Right lied about ACA.
btw ,,, there has always been a enough info for all who were capable of understanding ACA to do so!

(3,283 posts)I read down thru the posts and tho I agree that some of these ideas have merit, as a practical solution they would provide little help. All the PSAs that can be made are of no value if people don't believe them because of their hate for the President. You could have hour long programs in prime time to explain the whole system but people who hate the president wouldn't watch anyway because to them it would just be lies and propaganda. I have tried to deal with this type of person on this issue and have made zero progress as they are not interested in being informed, they are only interested in hating the President. One of these people even told me flat out that as long as that n..... is in the White House the country will go down hill. I live in NW Wi. but this area is loaded with this attitude.
get the red out
(13,460 posts)the PSAs don't mention the connection to Obamacare. I am sure that is on purpose, we do have a Democratic Governor even though a substantial part of the population is as out of touch with reality as in any red state.
TBF
(32,000 posts)There is certainly a segment that is going to hate it just because he's proposing it (and a certain segment of the press which will magnify that message).

(3,596 posts)for this confusion....
Since it's passage I have seen virtually ZIP, ZERO from him or his folks about the ACA.
If anyone is to blame for this it is Obama and his staff. They needed to immediately engage in promoting this and explaining its benefits.
Now as to this story I'm not sure even that would have made a difference. I think these people are intentionally uninformed or simply choose to be hoodwinked by their pastor or the GOP talking heads (i.e. Rush, Glenn Beck, etc.)

(8,277 posts)I agree completely. If obamacare is so good for the country, (which I believe is a start) why aren't the Democrats and the Administration shouting it from the highest hilltop?
hmmm, why not?
Do they think that people will magically change their minds?
Do they know it's a sell out to the insurance companies rather than go with Single Payer (which is the BEST WAY TO DELIVER HEALTHCARE and has been proven over and over all over the world)?
Why isn't there an advertizing campaign about the law?

Really good article. I would love to spread the word about the AHCA, but don't know of any good links that provide easy to understand facts about it. If anyone knows of anything that would help, plz share.
What this article does show, is that people critical of the president would rather not have healthcare under the AHCA. It is a shame. Would love to share acts

(5,477 posts)There are some reference links given in the video that take you to a subsidy calculator, and one that goes to a listing of the states that are implementing the extensions to Medicare or throwing people under the bus.
Why don't ACA's proponents should change Obamacare into something else for very deep red states like RomneyCare or Obama-is-BadNect?

(9,298 posts)affordable health care would be a winner for Democrats, just like Medicare and S.S. Single payer or Medicare for all is clearly the way for a civilized nation to go, but once people start experiencing the ACA benefits for themselves.....well, we all know what people say about word of mouth.
