Carolyn Hester, who discovered Dylan and turned down the opp to be the 'Mary' of Peter, Paul and Mary.

On the Irish Famine...

On another note, guess which fellow Texas singer got her gig from this:

My husband was a big fan of hers in the 60s, and we have all her early records filed away among the vinyl. (Yes, including the Carolyn Hester Coalition, about which the less said the better.) I seem to recall that she was at a Bethlehem Musikfest maybe 15 or 20 years ago, and he got the chance to tell her how much her music had meant to him.

It's neat that she's your cousin.

I was at my Aunt Willie's house in Alamo Heights, San Antonio, early 60's.

My parents were in divorce proceedings and I wanted my Mother to marry either Mickey Mantle or Harry Belafonte (her first husband was J P Richardson [The Big Bopper]).

Carolyn and I were in the parlor and she was teaching me 'The Water is Wide' when this old beater Chevy pulled up in front of the house.

Out stepped Harry and Joan Baez and they started walking up the walk.

Aunt Willie screeched (infer true Texas redneck)...

"Carolyn, Carolyn, there is a nigger and a Mexican coming up our walk. Get rid of them before the neighbors see them."

We all set in on the swings on the veranda and played until it was past night.

We still do it, every little once in a while.

What a thrill - she was on her way to the concert at the time, crossing through a back alley.

And she still sounds fabulous, with such moving messages.
