This American Life: What Kind of Country?

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/459/what-kind-of-country

All across the country right now, local and state governments are finding they can't pay their bills. Schools are losing teachers, street lights are going dark, garbage is piling up in public parks, and cops are suddenly an optional expense.

Smaller government isn't working, and even though Conservatives in the story admit that, they still want more cuts.

I'm bumping this up for the Monday crowd. As always, This American Life rocked the story.

Give it a listen.

There was a time when you had to buy insurance just to get the fire department to come to a fire. The insurance company would issue you a plaque to stick on the front of your building or home -if you had no insurance they would let your home burn to the ground! There have even been cases in recent years when fire departments would not go to a rescue in unincorporated areas where the community was right down the street! You'd think in today's world people could at least depend on medical, police and fire protection -no matter what the circumstance! This is "devolution".
