In addition to this scene from Network he has done some fairly awesome other work.

Deliverance! -- squeal like a pig.

Superman -- Otisburg!

Hopscotch -- (w/ Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson, a CIA spy spoof -- fucking great). He cusses like a trooper. (Beatty's devout Christian and normally doesn't cuss.)

Charlie Wilson's War -- w/ Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts. Based on the true CIA intervention in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and its blowback. Great flick.

All of these parts are totally different characters. Ned Beatty pulls it off so effortlessly.

I am a fan.

BTW, if you've never seen Network, it is a must see. It's easily amongst the best.

monologues in cinema history, and "Network" is a film stuffed to the rafters with great monologues - easily, one of the greatest scripts ever written (Paddy Chaefsky). Ned Beatty's brief appearance in "Network" is superb and perfectly delivered.

He's an excellent actor, who can pull off almost any type of role, from the bumbling henchman Otis in "Superman" to "Deliverance" to this film.

We can never get enough. one untruth Ned told during his tirade.
Capitalism will make all things better. With America on the verge of becoming a third world country. that is not the case.

In fact, they are the middlemen of this delivery speech to anyone who gets in front of the "tube".

So... the point is.... Ned's performance is prophetic to our state of Republican led "democracy"... what a joke, indeed!

Any and all presidents get/got this "speech" for that matter.

A prophetic, untimely and bone-chilling speech if there ever was one. One of my all-time movie moments.

there was a an important minute at the beginning of this speech that should not be missed:

To paraphrase Paddy:
"There are no democrats, there are no republicans: there is only the constant struggle for power and the control of wealth. Parties and elections are only window dressing in a Potemkin village that you think is a democracy.
Abortion is not a real issue, and neither is the defect nor is health care. These are political commodities, like the pieces on a chessboard that serve only as the means for winning the game. Individually, each is as expendable as a dollar or a life. We don't solve issues, we don't compromise on issues, we create them and we use them. They give the electorate something to vote for.
Politicians are not in control: they are no more powerful than visitors to Disneyland. The stage has already been set and the price of admission already determined. They get to go on the rides but only the ride itself is abiding.
Yes, it is only fantasy that persists. Our dreams are what binds us together, not cold reality. History itself is an illusion and you have a place in history now.
Hope is only a kind of dream, Mr. President, and you have been elected by dreamers.
Time for you to wake up.
