My wife and kids drove from Southeast Texas to Provo/Orem Utah for a visit. While there we took the kids to see The Lion King in the biggest movie theater I have ever been in. While waiting for the lights to go out the theater filled and noticed something was different. At first I couldn't figure it out. After a minute or 2 I realized that there were no black people (my home town is 50/50 black/white). There were NO other minorities either.
The people were all nice until you tried to buy a pack of smokes (another story). But I wonder why this family would adopt a black child and bring her to that environment. Carl Malone, a former NBA All Star and Hall of Famer used to joke that he and his black team mates were the only blacks in Utah. It seems especially cruel since I am sure growing up was extra difficult for her, being so different. How would other Mormon families feel about their son dating a black woman, someone who by their religion was being punished by God.
I am glad she has made it to become open minded enough to lose some of the brain washing, no doubt her treatment helped her to see the light.

I am glad she was adopted and found a good home. It sounds like they raised her no different than they would have raised a bio-child. I am sure she went through some difficulties but their is no garantee that had she been adopted by a black family she would not have been taught things she didn't agree with

I am Black I fundamentally disagreed with being raised religious period but that is what my mother was always going to do with her children. Just as I am sure that was her A-Parents plan. raise her like our own because she is.

I felt the need to respond to your post because what is one glaring problem for me when I see OP's like this one. Our larger DU population seems to be willing to speak for us, of issues that concern us. They don't really seem willing to speak too us. We add our perspective, the conversation ends.

To our larger DU population. Yes. That was a massive over generalization. Please flame me. Just stay with the issue. Stay with the conversation. Help me learn to hold the dialectic of both of our world views as valid.

This time in my experience is even worse for me then when "*" was in office. Precisely because I share the same skin color as the POTUS. Please ask me how that can be possible.

BTW, my post count may be low, but I have loved this place since Jan. 2006 when H2Oman told me not who but what Brewster Jennings was.

I think mis-understandings happen on DU because we don't talk face to face. I seriously doubt most of the more let's say boisterous people, would be so animated in-person. So I don't pay them any mine when they post objectional things because of something I typed.

I do find it funny when people speak about being black, or what blacks experience and they are not black LOL

I think it's silly to complain because a family did the most amazing thing ever and opened their home to a child they did not give birth to. That is something More people of races should do. I would love to do it. unfortunately I live in a Tiny Condo with my DH and two, and when were considering buying a larger home the market tanked. we decided to stay put because, well "the devil that you know" as they say.

It funny but I think everyone assumes they are communcating with the majority race on DU. I know people assume based on my Name I could never be anything but white.

I posted a photo once proving I was infact a Proud Afro Haired Heather, Shock and Awe LOL. We shall over come!

We don't know her circumstances before adoption. Politically, Republicans are attempting to disenfranchise blacks and are very critical of black culture. We don't know the conversations they are having on these subjects, but if they are having them, I'm sure they have been a little more interesting of late, and hopefully, that is a good thing for all of them!

I would hate to have to talk to them. I would like to see more cross culture conversations on DU. Unfortunately I tend to start them with a snark. Thanks for the clarification.

is that I forget the rest of the country is not DU. I read and I read hear. Then I go running off at the mouth out there, thinking, you know, its the truth. Only to find they don't know. Gets me in trouble with even my liberal/progressive friends. Wait wait, then I feel butt hurt because they are not all DUers. When really it is not all their fault. I do not own a smart/dumb phone. I do not own a TV. I stopped reading daily rags over ten years ago. For most people in this country, that is how they are informed. The media are not in the truth business. The media sold us out in the 90s right about the time they where given digital technology for free.

Whadda gonna do?

I'm cool with people speaking up.
Just don't speak for me.
