In 1967 my home town was nearly destroyed by racial unrest. I could smell the smoke, which filled my lungs as much as it filled the skyline. The Motor City, the Arsenal of Democracy, was set aflame. LBJ released the National Guard troops to restore order. There were jeeps driving past my house with automatic weapons on board.

However, in 1968, the city of Detroit was united. Mickey Stanley, Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, Mickey Lolich, and so many other people who only loved baseball brought the world championship to Detroit.

Kudos to you tonight, Boston. But Detroit needs this. May the gods of baseball and justice prevail this year.

And above all, may the best team win. But please, let my home town be it.
