(there is a high pitched sound but you can still hear Malalai.

As the U.S. war in Afghanistan passes the 12-year mark, Minnesotans had an opportunity Tuesday to hear a first-hand account of the war from the perspective of an Afghan woman and human rights activist.

Malalia Joya spoke at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Her speech is live streamed replayed here on The UpTake.

NOTE: Due to technical difficulties, The UpTake was unable to live stream this event as planned. You may watch a video recording here, but please note that the audio does not begin until about the 2:30 mark on the video and is a bit distorted. Malalia Joya begins speaking at about the 10-minute mark. The UpTake regrets the difficulties.

Joya has been called “the bravest woman in Afghanistan.” At a constitutional assembly in Kabul in 2003, at the age of 25, she stood up and denounced her country’s powerful U.S./NATO-backed warlords. She was suspended from the Afghan Parliament in 2007 for her criticism of warlords, drug barons and their cronies.

Although she has received numerous death threats, she has continued to speak our against corruption within her government.

Joya is a powerful voice for Afghan women, and is a vocal opponent of the U.S. war and occupation of her country. She has received numerous international awards.

Malalai Joya is on a U.S. tour sponsored by the United National Antiwar Coalition and the Afghan Women’s Mission.
