Edited to add: I did love the video, nonetheless!

(6,852 posts)...a cat would slip out the window and let you burn.
A dog would wake you up so you can get out.

(86,647 posts)I have had three different cats who had never met each other who would come and wake me up if a) someone they didn't know came into the yard or was approaching the door; b) would watch my back while out in the yard and alert if someone looked like they were coming near the yard; c) would chase dogs other than their/our friendly neighbor's dogs out of the yard; d) wake me up if something wasn't right in the house or the yard.
One cat even woke me up when a water line out in the yard burst and was spraying water all over the place. Much like dogs, they learn what you show them. If you spend time with your cats like you would with a dog, they will also act as protectors. I would trust any of my cats to alert me if the house was on fire.
Maybe you just like dogs better.
The video was funny!
[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]My cats alert when anyone they don't know comes into the property or there are strange noises outside.
My almost 2-1/2-year-old gray male follows me everywhere and growls if anyone strange comes anywhere near. He acts more like a protective dog than a cat sometimes and as a matter of fact, I nicknamed him "Houn' Dawg" because he acts so much like one. The two small dogs in our building both like me but are afraid of him. lol

(86,647 posts)was born wild and would guard me in the yard and would come over and stand next to me nd wrap her tail around my ankle to let me know that I should pay attention. If I was sleeping and someone entered the gate, she would come inside and stand one me and growl while looking out the window. I called her my guard dog dressed up in a kitty costume, she was way more like a dog than a cat and her best friends were my friends' dogs, she didn't like most other cats except my friends' cats. And she played with all the squirrels in our trees, they taught her to run at lightning speed up a tree and along the top rail of a hurricane fence. when one of the squirrels died, she would come and tell me so I could go out and bury them.
She was awesome, and I really miss her.

I've had many cats over the years and know all too well the empty spot that always remains when a loved pet is gone.

(86,647 posts)It's been about ten years now but it still hurts, that one was really different and like my only child. I hadn't had a pet in over fifteen years due to my "road life" wasn't fair to have one. Haven't had one since due to the lifestyle I have now, not enough room, they'd have to be indoors due to harsh environment and too much wildlife outside. I'd love to have a couple kitties but that will only be when I can provide a good home for them.
I make do with all the wildlife out here though. I have a mating pair of foxes, a pine marten and a few coyotes who come around the cabin snooping for voles under the woodpile and the occasional bear or elk. It's not a bad trade off but I can't snuggle up with them like with a kitty or two.

(23,156 posts)But what I did notice, is that just about every single time the dog was wagging its tail, indicating friendliness. When a cat twitches its tail (they don't wave the tail, there is a huge difference) it's indicating irritation or worse, so I wonder if cats often misinterpret the dog body language.
We humans can readily learn both. But I wonder if our canine and feline companions simply can't learn another language. Hmmm.
I will add that one of the most amusing things I have on video is of someone handing our cat (sweet and friendly cat) to our younger son and his recoiling for comic affect and saying, "No! Not the pointy end!"
