"The promise of a prosperous middle-class life with decent work, rising living standards, and the potential for a better future has long been the foundation of the American dream. But as America continues to struggle to recover from the Great Recession, it has become clear that the middle class is in jeopardy -- and many of the policies of the last 40 years are to blame.
Examining the political, legislative, and corporate choices that have pushed the middle class to the brink, Pulitzer Prize- and Emmy Award-winning journalist, producer, and bestselling author Hedrick Smith details the story of this demise. In his new book, Who Stole the American Dream?, Mr. Smith analyzes how "pro-business" policies dismantled the previous American social contract and tells the stories of the people who have been left behind. ..."

It took me 6 weeks.
It's real, it's dark, and it will change your thinking forever.

(27,137 posts)The question may seem childish to some, but I want you all to really think about this. Why must we pay to live on our own planet?
Why did we make an economic system that is completely decoupled from the laws of nature, when we know that we live on a finite planet?
Why do we work for money that we then have to use to get access to resources we need, when the resources is already here?
And why do some people inherit land and claim it their private property, making other people pay or work for having access to their property, even when everybody is born on the same planet and there is more than enough room for everybody?
Again, why must we pay to live on our own planet?

(2,282 posts)Wonderful to hear him lay out how we got to where we are -particularly about the 401k's and an bank scam mortgages.
He's definitely become more frustrated and radicalized. Very interesting what he said about "immigration reform" being not in working peoples' interest. And I agree with him that voting and writing letters aren't going to fix it this time. Worth the time listening.
