Via The Huffington Post: "Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African-American teenager, was shot and killed in a gated community in Florida late last month by a white neighborhood watch captain, according to police. But the watch captain, George Zimmerman a 28-year-old college student who has admitted to police that he shot the young man still walks free. And Martin's family is pleading for answers and demanding justice...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur break it down on The Young Turks.

(7,875 posts)-but could they have found a more non-threatening black kid to shoot? Leave it to a southern state to let bullshit like this fly.

(15 posts)Whenever a police officer is involved in a shooting, every detail of the shooting is investigated no matter the apparent circumstances. In the end they will probably be cleared but at least there is an investigation. Why was Zimmerman allowed to just walk away without any investigation at all? Something seems very wrong here.

(57,936 posts)Normally a claim of self-defense is a defense to a charge, not the basis for assuming innocence. Again, where is equal justice in this situation?
Have our police and courts just forgotten that justice is supposed to be blind?
If the tables had been turned, if an African-American had been walking around with a gun on neighborhood watch patrol and had shot a white 17-year-old with Skittles in his pocket, don't you think the African-American would have been charged and then presented his defense to a jury (if he didn't plead)? Come on. The injustice is embarrassingly obvious. I'm not judging the shooter. I'm just saying that his innocence or guilt and the merit of his defenses should be decided by a jury.

(6,891 posts)Zimmerman was a vigilante who was told by 911 to leave the kid alone and not follow him, did it anyway, gunned him down and was not arrested? Is that correct?
