(3,073 posts)Great video- thanks for posting! I moved here from Boston in the early 90's when it was a very different place. Since then, I've seen the changes and increased flooding. My condo is on the West Side of the island on the bay. My street (which is actually a small island) as well as the neighboring areas flood often. Knee high water for blocks. Especially during a full moon and high tide.
We're spending a fortune for those new pumps and to upgrade the overall infrastructure- and the traffic due to road closures is horrendous. Not to mention the damage to small businesses in the areas. I really do hope it all works out the way the engineers think it will in which case these months/years of inconvenience will have been well worth it.

(5,527 posts)I happen to be close friends with the narrator of this documentary. He is John Englander, the author of "High Tide on Main Street". I highly recommend his book and his webpage . JohnEnglander.net
He also has a TEDx talk that you can see at his website.
It is a mixed blessing being close to an expert on this subject. I always feel better informed than the general population but man it can be a downer. He scares the hell out of me.
I am also in the engineering business designing drainage. I have done some work in Miami Beach where much of this story takes place. I commend them for getting ahead of the curve and trying to think ahead. But they are fighting a losing battle.
We can't even begin to address these issues until we can get the lion's share of the population on the same page that it actually is happening. Efforts like this are important to get people to see the evidence that is right in front of them.
Thanks for posting this.

(30,947 posts)I now live in North Georgia where I moved in 1989. I lived on Miami Beach, Miami and all areas of South Florida. I only remember one serious flooding incident. I lived in Miami Springs across the canal from Hialeah. One year there was a period of rain for two weeks constantly. The canal flooded over the banks into people's yards and into the streets. Some people had to use rowboats to navigate the streets.
But the worst flooding I can remember was here in North Georgia in 2009. Everything was flooded. I tried to get home from work and could not go onto my street because it was flooded. I had to spend the night in a motel which was almost around the corner from my house. All the creeks in the area had flowed over their banks.
