(770 posts)Unfortunately the TV presentation is purely verbal, lacks graphics to allow a better view of the proposal. The way I see it the law would cap permits at 80 % of 2005 levels, and there would be an auction held by the permits? I got the sense I missed something because that sure doesn't make sense.
I watched that section of the video twice, and I can see different ways to interpret what the speaker said, none of which make sense. Next time I would use a graph.
I also want to point out we have other sources of green house gas emissions which need attention. For example methane emissions. These come from cattle, rice paddies, garbage dumps and the gas industry. President Obama is proposing gas industry regulations, but the methane emissions from organic garbage are being ignored. Garbage has to be segregated and the organic garbage has to put in dumps with methane capture piping. The methane can be used as fuel.
Finally, I think those sea level rise mentioned in the clip are way too high. There's no need to panic people with low quality science. At this time the best projection is 60 centimeters by 2100 (the IPCC median). The key is not to exaggerate like we have seen in the past, because when people sense those predictions aren't close to happening they will think that indeed the whole thing is a government fad.

(11,087 posts)The extra carbon dioxide now in the atmosphere won't make its full effects felt for a few decades. The momentum in the climate system will continue to warm the Earth even if we stopped using fossil fuels this afternoon. And we have triggered numerous tipping points that will worsen the global climate catastrophe without further help from us.
People like Senator Inhofe will just make it that much worse. If he lives long enough, he may repent and apologize, but it won't do any good.

(750 posts)The greed and selfish egos that predominate our political social structure as we are now in this present Conservative way will terminate existence.
Unless the present Conservatives change, or we the people change todays modern Conservative to believe it is their best interest to live long and prosper by going green, life as we know it will depreciate exponentially faster than a bundled housing derivatives sold on the securities market.
Those with money may think they will be able to flee the planet after resources are exhausted need to rethink life as they know it.
Humans destine to travel in space will likely evolve in shape and metabolic systems. Staying on the planet to help reverse the process is the only way to preserve our existence, since it is estimated the solar power has a few billion years left.
Space travel will likely change the human shape, the only way to stay in this form, human like will be to convert away from fossil fuel. The wake-up call, there is not mush atmosphere in space and there is no gas or water out there. It would have to be made anyway.
The atmosphere alone will be a gage, the balance of nitrogen and oxygen is the example and that needed blend to be able to have vision.
To make a long story short, Einsteins special theory of relativity is basically based on a simple octave of wavelength called the vision spectrum, essentially the rainbow. Once we lose the ability to see a rainbow it is time to pray.
