This was the last Republican President that was actually in charge.

After Nixon the Republicans reduced the office to a Public Relations Department for their unpopular ideas and have since shopped for a not too bright spokesman who is expected to get permission from their party bosses before acting. That was the model of Reagan that they have tried to duplicate ever since.
