is the way that I would characterize this argument.

Speaking of causal mechanisms - is it over population or over consumption (on the Western capitalist model) that is the problem...So the populations of the global south had fewer children. Would it make a big difference if their upwardly mobile consumption habits emulated that of the US.

I agree that over population is a problem on the horizon but having access to birth control is not going to be the panacea to environmental/ecological collapse as discussed here.

The fact that there are people on the right and people on the left – for different ideological reasons – that fail to grasp the simple concept of too many people, bothers me to no end. Just like the climate deniers, and the evolution deniers; they have no case.

Plus, each cure for the over-population problem, (and they’re all necessary) like empowering women, education, and economic justice are worth doing in their own right.
