The problem is a media that repeats Republican talking points endlessly. People are convinced that taking care of the less fortunate makes lazy moochers of them. We heard the same thing during the Irish potato famine.

whenever he heard someone say "Give a man a fish ... teach a man to fish." He'd often follow it up with, "Yeah, until the rivers run dry... or they're so polluted you can't eat the catch ... and you've got to buy the f***ing pole and bait ... oh yeah, and you have to be able to get yourself down to the river, which is hard if you don't have a car or money for gas ... and then there's the license you need to fish legally...." And so on.
