these guys who sign up to be jihadists...not only who are they? but what were they doing before they joined this crowd? Were they poverty stricken and unemployed? I can't imagine if they were going about their business and earning a living to support their families that their bosses would give them a thumbs-up leave of absence for an indefinite militaristic adventure. In the U.S., it's like Greg Boyle's philosophy of giving a gang banger a job and he/she will have no time for a gang affiliation. Maybe simplistic, but desperate people do desperate things to survive.

or what's transpired in the Middle East since the 50s would be playing out like it has but for the oil beneath the sands. THAT'S the bottom line.
