Owner Refuses to Pay $20 to Pick Up Blind Dog at Shelter - Tails of Hope

Jake the dog is worth more than twenty dollars. After he ended up at a shelter, his owner wouldn’t even pay the small fee to retrieve him. Luckily, Jake’s future is brighter than a life with an owner that underestimates his worth.

Blind Jake was found wandering the streets of Los Angeles when he was picked up and taken to the local shelter where his owners refused to pay $20 to get him back deeming him "not worth it."

May this "owner" get a horrible case of hemorrhoids!

Just when I think humanity cannot stoop any lower, I am always reminded that some of us can. Glad that Blind Jake has a happier life now.

We did an event in the high school of a town. It was a big spay/neuter event, run by a a couple of vets, two techs, and all the pet owners who were taught what to do at the event. A lot of their animal control is done with a bullet, and they didn't have a call for nearly a year after their event.

It was about showing respect to pet owners. Did about 140 dogs that weekend ( a few cats) at no investment except for their participation. We modeled it after the work of the old Montana Spay/Neuter Task Force, which used to do the same thing for the Native people in Montana. Their focus was respect for the owner and pets, which encouraged the same behavior in the owners. And there is a lot of statistical evidence, as well as letters ("dog and cat used to be a pain, now dog sleeps next to me and cat sleeps on my lap" stories, from prisons and public venues alike).

Sometimes if you show the owner what respect looks like in an atmosphere where they are welcome and can learn, it can have amazing results.

I do understand why one would wish a "case of hemorrhoids" or some other hit on them, but perhaps they are hit so much it wouldn't mean as much as someone structuring a way for them to help themselves, and learn something new.

It doesn't always work, but based on what I see in prisons and around us, it works as well as other, more punitive approaches, perhaps better.

Then again, perhaps someone just needs to slap the owner in the back of the head.

Gaston and Robeson are some of the worst, but many rural shelters are horrible, also. THings are getting better because of dog rescues bringing them north, but it is slow. Ms. King would go up and down the aisle, stuffing dogs, cats, puppies and kittens into the gas chamber, and when I used to call, she never gave a shit. The ACO of Robeson was caught because he was selling dogs to labs for experiments and pocketing the money. Monsters, all of them.

Newnan, Georgia - a relatively wealthy community - I rescued from there for years. Horrible.

Greenville, SC - when I started doing rescue, in 2007, they killed almost 20,000 dogs and puppies EACH YEAR in this well-off town.

Vermont - they can't even get dogs for their rescue days, because all those damn lib'ruls spay and neuter.

I love Vermont.
