(135,425 posts)Veterans -- and I am one (a retiree, in fact--luckier than a lot of vets for that reason, too) -- don't really want all the fawning and "thank you for your service" crapola.
They don't need all this "Have you thanked a veteran today?" smarminess. I'd rather see pictures of people holding up signs that said "I wrote to my congressman and asked him to prioritize funding for VA hospitals" or something like that.
You can't eat concerts, and salutes don't pay for prescriptions, and pictures of "supporters" who are all glomming on to a party on one day out of three hundred and sixty five don't get people appointments with doctors.
After all these years of War Without End Amen we have a LOT of vets who need help. Were it not for the great body armor we've developed, we would have had mortalities on the order of Vietnam with all of the injuries service personnel endured. Instead, we have tons of amputees in need of limbs. We have lots of traumatic brain injuries. We have a shitload of Post-traumatic stress (which, technically, is not a "disorder" because it's entirely NORMAL to have post-traumatic stress after seeing shit that would freak the average person out, often over and over again). Veterans who answered the call should be given the consideration they were told they would receive, without any hemming, hawing or being cheap about it.

"Thank you for your service" is not a conversation, but it's a start. Keep it going. Ask him where he served. Ask her what she did in the military. Listen, learn, and most importantly ask, "What's next?"2. SHARE
Join the effort. Share what you have learned about and from veterans and their families.Post on social media, introduce For Love of Country in your book club, discuss the issues. We all gain from your willingness to share.3. EMPOWER
4.CONTRIBUTE
5. LEARN
Understand why we honor and celebrate those who've served. Put aside the myths and misconceptions and bridge the civilian-military divide by getting to know vets and the values they bring home to our communities. Read stories of commitment and valor in war zones and at home in For Love of Country: http://forloveofcountrybook.com6. SERVE
Most of us haven't served in the military, but there are plenty of opportunities to serve in other ways. Volunteer where your passions lie, give blood, make your voice heard, vote - and do it in the name of our troops and their families.
The intent is to rabble-rouse, IMO, around issues. That's a plan.

(4,959 posts)...At one point during the concert, Springsteen, Grohl, and Zac Brown teamed up for a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revivals Fortunate Son. The performance was met with mixed reaction. Conservative website The Weekly Standard questioned why Springsteen and co. decided to perform an anti-war, anti-draft protest at a concert largely organized to honor those who volunteered to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, as The Washington Post notes, the song dates back nearly 50 years and was written in response to a different White House overseeing a different war. Furthermore, CCR frontman John Fogerty recently performed the song himself at another event organized by the White House.

Do you have to be pro-war and pro draft to be pro-military? I know many military, non of them are pro-war or pro-draft. Think before you speak, or critique.
