NPR Debate: Does Income Inequality Impair The American Dream?

At the latest Intelligence Squared U.S. event, two teams addressed these questions to debate the motion, "Income Inequality Impairs The American Dream of Upward Mobility."


Venture capitalist Nick Hanauer, with Elise Gould, argues that a robust economy relies on large numbers of innovators and affluent consumers — and that too much inequality prevents too many Americans from joining those groups.

They destroyed the class that could afford the American Dream and pushed them down one or two classes, scooping up all the money in the process. They did that by depressing wages, raising all regressive taxes, and killing the progressive income tax.
