Related: About this forumSen. Sanders: The Rebuild America Act
The Progressive Change Institute asked voters whether they support a massive infrastructure program that would create millions of jobs. It was popular by 71% to 18% -- a bipartisan landslide. The public wants big action!
Now, Senator Bernie Sanders is proposing a huge, $1 trillion infrastructure program -- which would create jobs repairing crumbling bridges and roads, expanding high-speed Internet, and increasing access to clean energy.

OP
This grand and good idea has nothing to with the TPP. It's an idea, with legislation ready to go.

(14,255 posts)1. Well, the TTP would jam this quite a bit -
A $1 trillion investment would put 13 million people to work repairing the backlog of infrastructure projects all across this country, he continued. Moreover, each project would require equipment, supplies and services, and the hard-earned salaries from the jobs created would be spent in countless restaurants, shops and other local businesses. And, all of this economic activity would generate new tax revenues to pay for the services that the American people expect and deserve.
With the TPP, all government contracts over a certain dollar amount must be offered to all signatory countries. Lowest bidder wins! That will not be an American bid, unless the American bid matches the low salaries of other signatories. Plus - forbidden to mandate Buy American. In addition, in my experience, the H-1B visa guys I worked with mostly sent their money home, packed lunches, shared accommodations. Not all that money went to local businesses, not by a long shot.

(14,255 posts)3. It is a fantastic and fabulous idea. I am just concerned that, by the time actual contracts
are ready to be offered, the TPP will have been inflicted upon us.
The TPP will have EVERYTHING to do with government contracts. And a whole lot more.
I will, come to think of it, just email Bernie and ask him about this very thing.

(23,946 posts)4. I would think contracts would be signed well before TPP becomes law.
I would think a valid existing domestic infrastructure construction contract would not effected by later, new international trade law.

I will share any answer I get with everyone.
