In accepting the Oscar for supporting actress on Sunday, "Boyhood" star Patricia Arquette wound down with:
"To every woman who gave birth to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody elses equal rights. Its our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America."

(44 posts)This whole issue is a tempest in a teapot. The days of women doing the exact same job as men and getting paid less are over. maybe you could find some isolated examples of this, but by and large, it's a thing of the past. Some of the pay gap that still exists can be explained by maternity, and some of it by the quite natural tendency of women to work in less physically demanding jobs. Equality is a fiction, born of a devotion to an ideal.

(9,326 posts)and I've never seen one where men get paid more for the same job. Women get promoted at the same pace everywhere I've been too. I make less than my wife and most guys I know are in the same boat.

(53,072 posts)are not the nation, and US government figures show that women do make less. Now, the other poster and many others think it is because we are worth less: we have babies, we aren't strong enough. In short, we are not men.
I have been paid less than men for the same job, even though I have had higher qualifications. Many women have experienced the same thing. I suspect you haven't experienced racism either. Are you going to claim it doesn't exist either? Your experience isn't universal, and other people's rights actually matter, even if they aren't white, male, and straight.

(9,326 posts)As for you getting paid less for the same work because you're a woman, I find it hard to believe. As for the statistics, the video suggested the rate was only 93 percent which could be a sampling error it's so small. No one is saying you are worthless, many people myself included just don't believe there is discrimination outside of isolated incidents.
