Investor rules, NAFTA as the template for TPP

The recently disclosed chapter of the TPP negotiations appear to be much like Chapter 11 of NAFTA, that Bill Moyers covered more than a decade ago in the documentary "Trading Democracy." This gives a sense of how the extra-judicial arbitration boards work. They operate outside the justice systems of the three member nations of NAFTA, and their decisions cannot be appealed in any national high court.

We were told NAFTA would help raise environmental standards and labor standards in other countries and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs here at home.

Those have been proven false.

We are being told the TPP will be great and open up new markets to us. It will only be great for Multi-National Corporations to overrule local governments.

Like in the case of the international disability treaty? This is a case where it is clear that our laws are in effect abrogated by a treaty. Shouldn't they oppose it on those grounds? Or will the demands of capital supersede all other concerns?

4. In NAFTA Chapter 11, the demands of capital supersede democracy.

Yet I remember at the time being told that NAFTA would lift all boats. It was sold on very rosy terms and we who opposed it were called old fashioned.

I can't believe that with the evidence from NAFTA Chapter 11, any Democrats would support the TPP.

We need to not participate in the TPP. But how does this defeat happen? One idea I have is to write in the local newspaper, letter to the editor. Join groups against TPP. Donate $$ to their cause...but act now, please.
