with one's external appearance.

And fwiw, only someone who is truly beautiful could endure with such grace the above experiment...

I remember finding my cousin crying in the garage because she wouldn't wear the heavy zinc-oxide ointment that was prescribed for acne back when we were kids, and her Mom told her that she'd never be popular unless she did what she was told, to combat the zits.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure my aunt didn't mean it the way it sounded, but when you're an adolescent there's not a whole lot of room for exegesis.

Back then, we all knew it was looks that mattered anyhow.

It's changed some, in fifty-plus years.

Some.

A little, anyway.

In some places.

For some purposes.

Limited ones.

cynically,
Bright

'The Verge,' a rather crummy link bait tech news site today 'turned off comments for a couple of weeks.' I applaud this, but it should be permanent.

You would not believe the hate speech that crops up in even the most seemingly innocuous places.

Trolls are storybookish and "quaint", these assholes ain't storybookish nor cute.

They need to be shunned by all except each other, in fact their photo's should be required to post...y'know these dreaming guys living in their parent's basement or whatever...

We humans have become "lapped" by our very own technology in many ways, but this is perhaps the most grim.

Thanks for posting, food for though, as least those of us who can think...

the color of his skin,

The lesson is contained in what happened when pastors he thought were his friends told him to quit his passion, give it up. An office of the Federal government, the FBI, sent him a letter encouraging him to commit suicide because "it would be the right thing to do".

You can look up the letter he wrote from the Birmingham jail to the people he thought were friends that should have stood with him. You can read other sources about the rest.

The lesson is that the only person who controls how you feel about what someone else writes is you. The weak allow themselves to be hurt.

One has to learn how to be strong enough and sure enough of yourself that you make the choice and own it. Not the writer.

Maybe a hundred or so would be in the room for a couple of days. People would start talking about the shit in their lives. Many times tears would fall. After a day and maybe 1/2, there would be fewer and fewer tears and these would be replaced by laughter.

Of course, not everyone got it. But if you were one of the ones, who did "get it," it was freeing.

10. My first wife wore very little make up....

...and she was always beautiful to me. Her skin wasn't perfect. She would get blemishes and touch them up. She might wear a little blush sometimes...just a hint. She did use a bit when we were going "out"....but I always told her I loved her no matter how she looked. It wasn't because her skin was so perfect. It was because we valued the health of her skin, no matter how it looked.

We have had friends who wore so much make up, it was like putting on a clown's face every day. I can't imagine. My current wife doesn't wear an awful lot, but she is so self conscious about how her skin looks. I have to give compliments every time I see her so that she can understand she is beautiful no matter how much or little she puts on. To try to compete with the air brush models on the magazine covers is unreal. It's not who they are, even. It's a myth.

Wish all women could accept themselves for who they are. When I saw the beginning of this video I thought she was beautiful then. Would help if she had confidence in herself and smiled a bit, but she is so fortunate to have the facial features that are desirable by everyone. Blemishes come and go. Your eyes and smile are what sets you apart.....in my humble opinion.

and culture devoted to telling them just the opposite. they aren't pretty enough, smooth enough, thin enough, etc,., etc. whole magazines devoted to telling them if they wear the right (expensive) clothes, the right (expensive) makeup, the right (expensive) perfume, the right (expensive) shoes, use the right (expensive cleansers), the right (expensive) cleaning agents, etc. etc. etc.

don't blame the women when the culture tells them 24/7 that they are NOT okay as they are.

Judgmental people will find something wrong with you anyways. It's better to just not give any fucks.
