Population is up from 247 million in 1987 to 319 million today.

Another statistic would be number of shootings by fatal and non-fatal since dealing with trauma has gotten much better so you would expect some drop from that. Still if we scale Reagan's number with the population change, we would expect that number to be 744 (it is less than half that number).

This reflects a general downward trend in the U.S. murder rate.

Unfortunately, unless you turn it around on them, call them on the error and actively ridicule them for it, most listeners will just nod and accept what they heard from the lying liar. It's human nature because it takes less mental energy to accept what you hear than to make the effort to question it and seek confirmation or contradiction.

A friend of mine once told me that he had heard 90% of EKGs are wrong and he repeated it as if he totally accepted that statement. "Really makes you think, doesn't it?" he said.

I did think about it and said, "That can't possibly be true. First of all, it would make for medical catastrophes with a frequency that would be all over the news. Secondly, how could you know they're wrong? You'd have to have some other way of measuring heart performance that is far more reliable than EKGs to compare them to."

"Oh! I hadn't thought of that," he said. Because he didn't try.
______________________

I would like to hear Democrats start relentlessly ridiculing Republicans for not putting in the work to check their supposedly factual assertions. Call into question the Republican candidates' competence, portray them as lazy, sloppy, and bad at hiring reliable staffers who are supposed to factcheck their statements. Turn their many factual errors into criticism of their ability to run a campaign. One thing politicians cannot afford is to look bad at running a campaign.

He never lets facts get in the way of a good narrative. In this case, it's an obvious "dog whistle" to say that the black President is getting (white) cops killed. The difference now, of course, is that it's a Presidential election and a lot more people are paying attention and checking facts. We have a very compliant and right-wing media apparatus in Wisconsin and Walker has never had a real rival on the Republican side. Now he has several and he's being exposed.

The really silly thing is that he has been by all accounts the most divisive figure in the history of Wisconsin state politics, and he's calling the POTUS the "Divider in Chief."

He hasn't grown up.

Chronologically, he might have reached the age of majority. He is allowed to vote, consume alcohol, etc.
But cognitively, he's still a juvenile. And should be regarded as such.

Unfortunately, he is what the Cock Bros want and need to fulfill their agenda: easily manipulated to adhere to their script.

45. Scott Walker is an idiot but he's not alone in assuming its worse
Fri Sep 4, 2015, 09:41 PM
Sep 2015

The real issue here is perception which has everything to do with the availability of news and information today as opposed to 30 years ago. Consider how news was delivered in the 80s, it was either in 30 minute spots or newspaper. Journalists had to decide what was worth reporting due to limited time on television and limited space in print. This is no longer the case with web delivery and 24 hour news cycles. Yes, cable news networks existed in the 80s but they had no way near the level of influence that they maintain today. The result is the perception that things are worse today because we hear about every tragedy and terrible event. Because the delivery of news can be immediate, it also allows the media to sensationalize in a way that was not possible in previous decades.

So yes, Scott Walker is an idiot for making that statement without checking his facts. I would never vote for the guy but he is just another example of a behavior that really is not party specific... the assumption that things today are so very much different than earlier decades. We fail to recognize the influence that access to information has on our presumptive opinions.

while i'm at it get rid of DWS and bring back howard dean, a robust conversation and 50 state strategy. aargh
