...at high speed without a helmet, although arguably no helmet will save your brain at 70 mph. Anyway, the former student is a young man who had a promising future in biology, but who currently cannot live alone or work because his cognitive problems are so severe. The last time I saw him, he struggled to write notes to himself to remember tasks if they were more than a few minutes away. His speech is badly impaired. He remembers some things he once did, but cannot do them any longer. He has simply forgotten a lot.

No one who knows him since since the accident will ever again skate without a helmet, I suspect.

6. Two kids in our area in the last few years have died on skate boards

But considering the things they do on them, I'm surprised it is so few who are seriously injured or killed. My nephew should have been killed a thousand times as a kid. That's life though. Taking chances. It's part of what makes life exciting. I was a tomboy and very athletic as a kid and I loved taking "some" chances. I always had a fear of heights though. Never had a place to ride a skate board growing up, so didn't get into those. My choice was horseback riding. I probably should have died a few times riding and jumping bareback. I've had two concussions from riding.

But I did get to ride the biggest half-pipe (at the time) on the east coast when I lived in Gainesville, Fl. in the early 90's.
It was on a farm out in the boonies and it was made of steel, it was crazy fast, and scary as hell.

9. I rode ramps and parks up and down the east coast.

Loved vert, bowls, pools, broke a few bones and have lots of scars from it. Biggest ramp was 12ft with a 2ft extension, man, doing backside ollies on that extension was like floating in space and trying to re-enter the atmosphere on the tip of your toes. I rode with a lot of cool people and had a great time. Biggest air was 8ft on a 11ft ramp, I was crazy, not fearless but loved getting scared. But you get older, have responsibilities and a job. Breaking your wrist or dislocating your shoulder or needing stitches in your knees keeps you out of work and too many times can get you fired. So, adios. But every time I drive half of me is watching the road and the other half is skating what I see. You could call it "old skaters problems", lol.
