(9,298 posts)Bernie's detailing the stats in the Republican budget that harm children resonated with some in the crowd. They were no doubt hearing them for the first time.

(5,122 posts)When I heard the question, even I swallowed hard not knowing how he was going to answer it considering the crowd.
Bernie is a Champion!

(63,912 posts)Mortal choice is one of the two factors, IMO, that separate us from other primates (the other being the ability to create art). If the government denies moral agency in half of its citizens, it is denying their humanity.

(8,401 posts). . . provided a much broader context for the audience in which to place their consideration of the issue. Bravo!

(2,212 posts)A politician who answered a highly political question not like a politician, but like a plain-speaking, honest, intelligent man.
Respect.

(63,912 posts)unplanned and accidental pregnancies happen all the time and i am sure most of the young women he is talking about are sexually active. Even if hey aren't they will be. So it is a message of hope and good faith and acceptance that has to happen with these women and I am sure it resonates....
Old Crow
(2,212 posts)At the same time, I have to observe that, watching the crowd in the video, about 20% of the audience, male and female, seemed determined not to applaud. I went to graduate school in the South. It's a different place. And most of the young kids going off to Liberty have grown up listening to their parents describe evil liberals at the family dinner table for 18 years.
The fact that Bernie was able to connect with a large portion of that population and be so well received by so many is--to channel Donald Trump for a moment--HUUUUGE!

(7,865 posts)A lesser politician would have made noises about making abortion more rare.
A lesser politician would have brought up their personal beliefs against abortion in order to placate the crowd or feign affinity on the issue before mentioning a woman's right.
Bernie took it head on and didn't flinch.

Old Crow
(2,212 posts)Also, it wouldn't surprise me if Bernie's words had a life-altering influence on several of the students who attended. For one thing, I'm sure it's the first time most of them heard that the top one-tenth of 1% of Americans own as much wealth as the bottom 90%. For those who were listening, that had to be an eye-opener.
