Just like all good Christian doctrine teaches - not give up your possessions - own MORE OF THEM.

(57,936 posts)In a society in which women with children especially disabled children can find themselves alone and having to provide for their children with very little outside help, it is impossible to deny the opportunity for abortion.
Allowing our government to deny the right to have an abortion to women, that choice to either give birth or not, without insuring the mother that she will not be alone or have to rely on her husband alone to provide for her children in a crisis, say a divorce, or illness or death of a parent, is just not a viable alternative.
People who categorically oppose abortion do not understand what it is for a mother to bear a child for which she cannot provide, maybe a child with a serious disability at birth, maybe a child in a situation in which she cannot work or is herself disabled or faces some crisis.
Abortion is not a simple issue. Bernie's idea about providing women with paid family leave would go a long way toward awakening in our country the compassion to insure that every child is a welcome child.
That is not the case now, and in part that is due to the economic injustice that Bernie preached about at Liberty.
And i think what his talk there was as much a sermon on social justice as it was a political speech.

(7,960 posts)I was particularly struck at the cheers when he said that the U.S. government should have no role in a woman's decision to have an abortion. He very skillfully got at the contradiction in the conservative position.
Let's be real, he probably changed the minds of only a small percentage of those students but he did a great job of stating the obvious, a really great job.
